Sometimes the week goes by terribly, unbelievably slow and Friday can’t come soon enough.  And then there are other days that zoom by without any warning and next thing you know, wham, bam!  I’m getting emails about Thanksgiving.  What the heck?  I haven’t planned out what I’m doing for Halloween…

Hot toddy is a classic winter beverage.  It is served warm and strong.  My apple cider hot toddy is comprised of the same components of a tradition toddy with the additional kick of spiced apple cider.

A slight twist on the traditional Manhattan, Jeff Mauro’s cocktail calls for a spoonful of maple syrup to sweeten the mix of rye whiskey and dry vermouth.

Wasn’t it just Christmas? Oh yeah, these two holidays really do collide; don’t they? Just when we need to take a breath from all of the hustle and bustle of the Christmas holiday, New Year’s is fast upon us. That’s why I like simple cocktails for this celebration; nothing too elaborate that requires I not imbibe; that’s for sure!

This one is simple, beautiful and tasty. Cranberry juice and Grand Marnier are combined with a sparkling wine (or even sparkling cider for those passing on alcohol) and it fits the bill perfectly. Easy. Gorgeous. Good.

Tis the season to be jolly, and to drink hot mulled cider. This delicious hot apple cider drink is a specialty of New England. Spiced with a clove-studded orange, nutmeg, allspice, and cinnamon, hot mulled cider is the perfect drink to serve during the holidays.

1 Pour apple cider into a 3-quart saucepan, cover, turn the heat on medium-high. While cider is heating up, take a vegetable peeler and peel away a couple thick strips of peel from the orange. Press about half of the cloves into the peeled part of the orange. (You can also just quarter the orange and add the slices and cloves separately. I just like seeing the orange bob up and down.)

Press cloves into the peel of quartered orange. Combine all ingredients in a medium saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat (do not boil). Reduce heat to low, and cook 30 minutes. Remove orange and cinnamon.

RockSugar uses the juice of calamansi, a delicious but hard-to-find citrus fruit. We approximated its flavor with a mix of other citrus.

Muddle lemongrass and lemon juice in a pitcher. Stir in Riesling and blood orange, grapefruit, and lime juices. Chill at least 30 minutes and up to 2 hours; strain into a clean pitcher.

The Port Elderflower cocktail is a lightly sweet concoction I put together one night when I was in the mood for port. I got to wondering what it tastes like with one of my favorite liqueurs, St. Germain Elderflower.

You don’t run into port cocktails that much. We usually think of port as a sipping spirit rather than the basis of a cocktail. This cocktail bears some similarity to a Rum Sangaree, which blends port with dark rum and Cointreau. It also resembles the Crimson Cocktail, which uses gin rather than rum, and adds in some lemon juice.

I’m pretty much a purist when it comes to martinis. I can’t bring myself to imagine what’s involved with Martini: The Game, a cards–and–dice game that makes each player a bartender working to whip up cocktail creations. My version of that game would be pretty boring: a bunch of gin cards, the occasional dry vermouth card, and a die that just says “olive” or “twist” on all sides. Not a fun game, but these ingredients do make a superior cocktail in my opinion! – Sheri Giblin

Jessica Torres – After making yourself a big batch of pumpkin pie infused vodka you have a few options. The first is to drink it straight out of the jar. The second is to try it in the pumpkin pie martini. Your third option, but by no means your final, is to put that infused vodka to work in this pumpkin pie vodka cocktail that I’m calling a Naughty Pumpkin. I have no doubt that you’ll enjoy whichever option you choose.

Also I came up with this pumpkin pie vodka cocktail last year as an option for a Thanksgiving cocktail. I never got around to posting it on the blog because I ran out of time before the holiday. That seems to happen to me a lot. Guess it helps me be prepared for the following year.

Jordan and Clark Cord – Hey guys, it’s Clark sharing the recipe today! I offered to write the post for this new drink because bourbon brings back some nostalgia from those good ol’ college years. Back when I thought it was so cool to drink Kentucky straight bourbon with no chaser… And I’m not talking about the good stuff, either! Needless to say, those days are long gone and my palette is a bit more refined. Now, if I’m drinking whisky, it’s going to be in a delicious drink like this one.

For this recipe I wanted a proper bourbon with that classic Kentucky taste, and one that would provide a higher-proof kick to this sweet, maple-tasting drink. After perusing over 100 varieties at Astor Wine and Liquors in SoHo, I decided on Elijah Craig’s 12-year small batch bourbon.

The caramel depth and toned-down tartness of seared lemon is a total game-changer in this make-ahead gin cocktail that’s great for crowds.

Why this recipe works:

  • Searing the lemon halves before juicing mellows their acidity and transforms their flavor into something richer.
  • Chilling the mixer base lets you mix up a big batch ahead of time and gives the rosemary time to infuse.
  • A complex, botanical-rich gin like Botanivore from St. George Spirits makes this drink with a simple ingredient list anything but predictable.
